Rosh Chodesh Adar

Month of Joy

Rosh Chodesh Adar - Pisces

The month of Adar is the twelfth and final month of the Hebrew calendar and corresponds to the astrological sign of Pisces. Those born under Pisces are said to have the benefit of “seeing” all of the prior signs.  For this reason, Pisces is often associated with heightened spiritual sensitivity and awareness elevated.  Souls with elevated spiritual capacity are sometimes understood to reincarnate into this sign.

Pisces have unique insight to understand that Light is revealed through sharing.  Yet because they trust that "everything will work out for the best",  they sometimes become passive. The correction for Pisces is action - stepping into the leadership rather than waiting for outcomes to unfold on their own.  Moses was born in Adar, and like him, Pisces can use their spirituality, modesty and compassion to uplift others - provided they act.

Adar contains the energy of miracles because it contains the holiday of Purim - the cosmic holiday that transforms darkness to Light. The sages teach that in the era of Moshiach consciousness, the only holiday that will be celebrated will be Purim. Pisces is a water sign represented by two fish positioned in opposite directions. The two fish hint to the fact that Pisces can come and go between both the physical and spiritual realms. As a water sign, Pisces is associated with mercy and flow. Fish, which never close their eyes, are also symbols of protection from the evil eye.

The word Adar is associated with the spinal cord — the channel that supports and stabilizes the entire body. In the same way, Adar stabilizes and integrates the entire yearly cycle.

Letters of the Month - Kuf & Gimmel

According to the Sepher Yetzirah, the Hebrew letters are spiritual frequencies through which the universe was formed. Each month is influenced by specific letters. The letters for the month of Adar are Kuf and Gimel.

Kuf created the constellation of Pisces and represents the connection between the upper (spiritual) and lower (physical) worlds.  Kuf is unique in that it is only letter in the Hebrew alphabet that extends below the line, symbolizing its ability to descend into the lower realms and elevate them.  By acting as a "double-agent", the Kuf can enter the realm of darkness, confront negativity head-on and Pisces can use the wisdom to control negative aspects of their lives.  When the leg of the Kuf, that part that goes below the line and enters the lower realm, is removed, we are left with the letter Hei, associated with the Divine Name. This hints to the fact that when we elevate darkness properly, it reveals G-dliness.

Gimel created the Planet Jupiter which governs Adar and carries the energy of expansion and sharing. Meditating on these two letters invites us to transfrom lower experiences into wisdom and then share that Light with the world.

Days of Connection in Adar

The holiday of Purim falls on the 14th of Adar and is also celebrated on the 15th in certain communities.  In years with two Adars, Purim falls in Adar II. Purim has deeply mystical significance and is celebrated by the reading of the Megilla - the Book of Esther, along with and a big feast, dressing up in costumes, exchanging portions of food and giving charity to the poor. Spiritually, the holiday reflects the ability to convert darkness into Light, regardless of our circumstances, and is associated with great joy.

The story describes how a seemingly irreversible edict to destroy the Jews, put in place by King Asheverous' evil henchman Haman, is reversed and Haman and his 10 son's are hung on the same gallows built for Mordechai the Jew.  The story is beautifully told and despite the clear hand of G-d working behind the scenes to save the Jews from destruction, G-d's name is never expressly mentioned throughout the reading. This alludes to the fact that what is hidden is often more powerful than what is revealed.

The story of Purim has very interesting connections to Nazi Germany and I've included a link to a video that details the connection: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzaJZ0bGe0s&t=172s

Adar has several other powerful days connection:

3rd of Adar - Moses birth
13th of Adar - Esther's fast ahead of the Purim celebration
15th of Adar - Shushan Purim
Shabbat Shekhalim - a reminder of collective responsibility and contribution
Shabbat Zachor - the remembrance of Amalek, symbolizing doubt

These sacred moments amplify the joy and miracle-consciousness of the month.

Practical Tools for the Month

1. Choose Joy Intentionally.  Joy in Adar is not circumstantial — it is a spiritual tool. Each morning, consciously declare:
“I choose joy today.” Even in challenge, look for one hidden blessing.

2. Act Where You’ve Been PassiveIdentify one area of your life where you’ve been waiting instead of leading. Take one concrete step forward this month.

3. Transform One DarknessWhen faced with frustration, doubt, or fear, ask: How can I convert this into Light? What is this teaching me?
Write it down. Extract the wisdom.

4. Increase SharingGimel represents expansion and generosity. Add one new act of sharing this month — whether time, charity, mentorship, or encouragement.

Adar teaches us that what is hidden may be powerful, that miracles are woven into reality, and that joy itself is a spiritual weapon.

Have a powerful Rosh Chodesh Adar -  and remember: "It's Adar, be happy!"
